ALARM IN BRAZIL
In just one day, nearly 35,000 people were infected, experts say: 'The worst is yet to come'
Brazil, the second country in the world after the United States to be hit hardest by the coronavirus pandemic, officially crossed the threshold of 50,000 Covid-19-related deaths on Sunday, a serious blow in a situation where the country records more than a million cases of infection.
At the same time, political instability is growing in the country, and the economy is in an increasingly difficult situation.
Brazil currently has 1,085,038 confirmed cases of coronavirus infection, which is 49,976 more than the day before, the Ministry of Health announced.
Experts say the real numbers are even higher because there is a lack of testing. The largest Latin American country typically records 1,000 deaths per day, but slightly less on weekends.
Brazil recorded its first case of coronavirus on February 26, and on Friday the number of infected exceeded one million.
From the first registration of cases to the present, the rapid spread of the virus has undermined support for right-wing President Jair Bolsonar and sparked fears of the country's economic collapse after years of anemic growth.
Bolsonaro, often referred to as “tropical Trump,” has met with widespread criticism for the way he manages the corona crisis. the country still lacks a permanent health minister after two ministers resigned in mid-April over a conflict with the president.
Bolsonaro avoided social distancing, calling it a measure that is more deadly for the job than the virus itself. He also promoted two anti-malarial drugs as drugs, chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, despite little evidence of their positive effects.
On Sunday, Bolsonaro said the military serves the will of the people, and that its mission is to defend democracy, adding fuel to the heated debate over the role of the armed forces that is ongoing at the same time as growing fears of the country's political fragility.
His comments arrived on the same day that his supporters and opponents gathered in cities across the country, as a clear symbol of polarization in Latin America's largest country.
