Protesters tried to tear down a monument to Andrew Jackson , the seventh U.S. president, in a park near the White House on Monday, but police dispersed them before they managed to tear down the statue with ropes.
Protesters tried to tear down a Jackson statue located in Lafayette Square, one of the main hotspots of clashes between protesters and police.
The famous bronze statue is the latest in a series of monuments that protesters across the United States have tried to demolish after unarmed African-American George Floyd died in custody in late May . Protesters most often targeted monuments to Confederate generals, but statues of Christopher Columbus were also torn down, while in San Francisco on Saturday, protesters tore down a monument to Union General Ulysses Grant and San Francisco's patron saint, St. Juniper.
