“ Gerhard Schröder also got involved, ” said the project manager. And the former German Social Democratic Chancellor (1998-2005) does not get involved in business if it is not extremely important. Because, this is a man sitting at the top of Russian energy companies. A close friend of Vladimir Putin .
This is a new scandal of the world's largest car manufacturer, Volkswagen (VW), a company to which the former slogan could be applied: what is good for VW, is good for Germany as well. BusinessInsider.de has announced that it is in possession of a recording of 50 hours of top company conversation on a sensitive topic: how to prevent Prevent from taking over Grammer.
Threat
The size and importance of Prevent is shown by the following fact: every fourth car in Europe has a part produced in Prevent's factories. In addition to the upholstery, it can also be a gearbox. Grammer, on the other hand, produces headrests and center consoles. VW, but also Daimler and BMW have concluded that Prevent could condition the rules of the game after Grammer joins them. And that fear is not unfounded. In 2016, Prevent cut off the delivery of upholstery and gearbox parts, so VW had to stop production of the Golf and Passat. All this was a consequence of the decision of the VW management to transfer part of the losses to its subcontractors after a scandal broke out with the fraud in the measurement of harmful substances in the exhaust gases. But Prevent did not allow itself to be frightened, but stopped the delivery of parts that VW could not find quickly enough elsewhere on the market.
This is the part that has been known so far. And BusinessInsider.de has now announced that on June 12, 2013, it developed a "Prevent exit strategy" for VW. The auto parts supplier was to be thwarted, and the project was called “Elefant”. According to Volkswagen’s calculations at the time, the shutdown of the Prevent could be completed by 2020 because suppliers cannot be so easily replaced due to long-term planning in car production. But their conversations, conducted in 2017 and 2018, have now come to light. At VW, they are in shock, Deutsche Welle (DW) reports. Which confirms that the search for the whistleblower has started in VW. Prevent told DW that they did not have any information about the recordings.
Stock
At VW, the alarm went off when Prevent bought a 20 percent stake in Grammer. An internal VW document, published by Facsimile of BusinessInsider.de, states that a "VW-friendly Grammer shareholder" should be included in the story and that Prevent's influence should be limited by increasing capital. “It is currently in a debate between us, Daimler and BMW. And one financial investor who would do it for us. I already had the first draft of what it would look like yesterday, ”claims one manager in the audio recordings. VW now claims that there was no coordinated cooperation with other car manufacturers. Who are silent. Shares in Grammer were eventually bought by Chinese company Ningbo Jifeng, and VW was the third-largest buyer. One manager suggests that Gerhard Schröder use his closeness to Putin to stop Prevent from receiving money in Russia. Schröder does not answer.

The special unit then discusses how to prevent Prevent from participating in new projects. A plan has been devised to exclude him from the upholstery competition for the new Golf 8. The manager asks, "How do we modify supplier lists to eliminate Prevent?" And this is where the problem arises: Prevent produces at the lowest prices, it is the most favorable supplier. "It would have to be decided not to go by the 'best-bid' principle," the interviewee said. Because removing Prevent from the list of suppliers would be "very suspicious". But, they found a solution and Prevent did not get a job at the Golf 8. VW confirms on request that there was a discussion about "how to deal with the new Prevent offers". deliveries.
The following part is especially interesting: “We know that Prevent knows everything we do. Even on topics, where only a handful of people were instructed, they still knew everything. Maybe there's something glued under the table. "
The cooperation with Prevent ended after VW terminated all contracts with the group in March 2018. The result was countless mutual accusations.
13 thousand workers worldwide
Prevent is a company from Bosnia and Herzegovina controlled by the Hastor family. On its website, Prevent states that “it all started with protective clothing,” and in 1997, the first upholstery for car seats was produced.
The link between Prevent and VW is Nijaz Hastor who worked as a manager at the Sarajevo Car Factory (TAS) which made the famous Golf. Before the war, Hastor went to Germany and worked at VW's Wolfsburg plant.
He returned to BiH in 1995 and founded the ASA Group, which until 2013 was the importer of VW's concern. He turned to production and today more than 6,000 people work in 15 plants in BiH, and 13,000 globally.
