DISPUTED ELECTIONS
After Putin's talks with Lukashenko, the Kremlin is convinced of a quick solution to the crisis in Belarus
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has said Russia has agreed to offer security assistance in the event of external military threats, the BBC reported on Sunday.
Lukashenko has expressed concern over NATO military exercises in Poland and Lithuania.
The news comes in days when the controversial president is facing mass protests over controversial August 9 election results.
Thousands of people gathered in front of state television on Saturday demanding that it fully follow the protests.
The protests are due to continue on Sunday. The "Freedom Parade" should take place in the afternoon in the center of the capital Minsk.
Pro-government protests were announced for noon.
“Everyone who loves their homeland and opposes the division of the country into two opposing sides will gather at this rally,” Belaya Rus, the rally’s organizers, wrote on their Facebook page.
However, there are reports that public sector workers are forced to attend the rally or will face the threat of losing their jobs.
Workers in state-owned factories have been on strike for days, and many have joined street protests against the president.
Riots erupted after Lukashenko won a majority in last week's election, the result of which was criticized amid allegations of electoral fraud.
