German Chancellor Merkel warns of the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the world
MEETING
Merkel will visit Macron in the second half of August at his residence in the Mediterranean
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has expressed concern over the rise in coronavirus infections in the country, but said the uptrend of the coronavirus pandemic could be brought under control, sources from her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) told the dpa on Monday.
At the first high-level meeting of the CDU after the summer holidays, Merkel advocated further easing of restrictions, said the sources involved in the talks.
Sources state that Merkel rejected the possibility of spectators attending Bundesliga matches.
Merkel reportedly plans to hold her next meeting with the prime ministers of 16 German federal states, which she did on a semi-regular basis during the pandemic to coordinate the response at the state level, despite variations in restrictions at the regional level.
The CDU summit meeting was held online.
The number of daily infected people has been growing in Germany since the end of July.
The opening of schools and kindergartens is currently a priority for the CDU in the fight against coronavirus, said party leader Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer . "Everything must be done to prevent a second closure," she said at a CDU presidency session on Monday.
Many participants in the CDU presidency meeting expressed concern over the growing number of new cases in Germany and Europe, German media reported.
On Monday, according to the Robert Koch Institute, 561 new cases were confirmed in Germany, a significantly lower number of new infections than in previous days.
More than 1,400 new infections were recorded on Friday and Saturday, and more than a thousand new infections a day were last confirmed in May.
The peak of the epidemic in Germany was in early April, when more than 6,000 new cases were recorded in one day.
