POWERFUL DETONATION
In Somalia, seven people were killed in a car bomb blast in Mogadishu, targeting a military base
At least 17 people, including five attackers, were killed in a siege of a hotel in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, on Sunday.
Security forces fought a three-hour fight with al-Shabab Islamist fighters who attacked a popular beach hotel in the Somali capital.
The clash began when Islamist terrorists attacked a hotel, government spokesman Ismael Mukhtar Omar said.
An attack by armed men on the Elite Hotel was preceded by a car bomb explosion.
Armed men then stormed the hotel and took hostages, mostly young people who were having dinner there.
Security forces rescued dozens of people trapped in the hotel.
Al-Qaeda-linked Somali Islamist extremists have claimed responsibility for the attack.
The attack on the hotel came after months of peace. Earlier this year, a series of bombings took place in Somalia
