'Europe's last dictator' won 80 per cent of the vote, police stifled protests in Minsk
After President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko won a convincing majority of 80.23 per cent of the vote, against popular opponent Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, who won 9.9 per cent, unrest began to spread in the country over allegations that the votes had been rigged. There are several allegations, such as that polling stations closed before voters arrived to vote, that some voted before they opened, or that they ran out of ballots because they filled out the number of registered voters.
A video from a polling station appeared showing a member of the election commission descending a ladder from a second-floor window with a bag believed to contain ballots.
Nexta: Plot №17 of the Soviet district of Minsk (school №66). For some reason, the members of the commission go up the stairs from the second floor window with packages in which there is something similar to a box. Or on packs of paper. The description of the video reads: "Polling station 17 of the Soviet district of Minsk. For some reason, commission members climb stairs through a second-floor window with packages containing something resembling boxes. Or papers. And it's all under the watchful eye of the police. "
Police forces, sometimes police vans, controlled numerous polling stations. Independent polls show that Tikhanovskaya received 71 percent of the vote, while Lukashenko received only 10 percent. So far, neither side's data can be independently verified.
Sunday's election was not monitored by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) because it did not receive an invitation in time.
- I will believe with my own eyes - the majority was for us - Svetlana Tihanovskaya told reporters on Monday, after extensive reports of vote-rigging in Sunday's elections.
Tikhanovskaya said she considers herself the winner of the election, not Lukashenko.
