Arrests in Minsk
Belarusian police detained hundreds of protesters against President Alexander Lukashenko on Saturday , and the foreign ministry said it would consider the possible participation of opposition politician Svetlana Tikhanovska in an EU ministerial meeting an interference in internal affairs, the agencies reported.
In the August 9th presidential election, Tikhanovska ran against President Alexander Lukashenko, who has ruled Belarus for 26 years. According to official results, Lukashenko won the election convincingly, but after the elections in Belarus, mass protests broke out due to, as the opposition claims, manipulation of the voting results.
The Belarusian Foreign Ministry said it had informed European diplomats of its position, Belta news agency reported.

Russia's state news agency reported earlier that Tikhanovska was expected to attend a meeting of EU foreign ministers next week.
Belarusian police detained hundreds of participants in a mostly female protest in Minsk, where about 2,000 people demanded Lukashenko's resignation.

Protesters briefly clashed with police, who then blocked their way and began pulling people out of the crowd one by one, one witness said.
At one location, dozens of women were surrounded by security forces in green uniforms in front of the mall and shouting "Only cowards beat women!"
