Italy has extended the state of emergency to defend against the covida-19 pandemic until January 31, 2021. At the same time, the government has reintroduced the obligation to use a protective mask outdoors in all cases where citizens meet or pass by other citizens. They are exempted from the obligation of a person living together, if there are no other persons nearby. Penalties for the violation and the provisions on masks are fines of 400 to 1,000 euros, as a powerful deterrent.
The same fine threatens bar owners who do not force their guests to wear masks against covid-19 infection. They are also threatened with the closure of the facility and a ban on work for 5 to 30 days.
Even more severe penalties threaten people who do not respect quarantine: a misdemeanor fine of 500 to 5,000 euros, a prison sentence of 3 to 18 months, and if they infect someone they can be accused of negligently causing the infection, which can result in years in prison.

All travelers from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Spain, Malta, Greece and Croatia must undergo a swab at the entrance to Italy to determine if they are infected with the coronavirus. The same obligation applies to passengers coming from Paris and seven other French areas.
The number of people infected with covid-19 in Italy has been growing steadily for the ninth week in a row, on the entire national territory. The situation, however, is not as critical as that in Spain or France.
