In an interview with the daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung and five other European newspapers, Merkel called the pandemic a "challenge of unprecedented dimensions" and called on EU members to preserve their internal market "and act uniquely towards the world". "I am counting on the member states to have a common position in the common interest in such an emergency situation," the chancellor said. The proposed EU recovery fund is "a special response to a special situation," she said. Germany has expressed support for Spanish Economy Minister Nadia Calvino , head of the Eurogroup, which brings together eurozone finance ministers, but the final decision rests with the Eurogroup itself, she said.
