Usually when Facebook is mentioned, the first things that come to most people's minds are user privacy, negligence in protecting users' personal data, election manipulation (in the US), questionable business practices, and social media toxicity. Still, in an interview with YouTube star Marcus Brownlee, Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg spoke about the future of virtual and augmented reality.
In that interview, Zuckerberg offered a rare insight into his vision for the two technologies that Facebook deals with and invests in developing its Oculus.
Explained what exactly will kill the iPhone in the future, but without mentioning the globally most popular modern gadget. Not only that, but he hinted that Facebook is targeting just that position.
Of course, Apple is also working on its own version of augmented reality glasses, but they are designed to connect wirelessly to the user’s iPhone, just like the Apple Watch.
Zuckerberg says smartphones are amazing, but that they distract users from the world around them.
You have this incredibly powerful computer in your pocket, but it’s not the end of the road. The cell phone distracts you from the world around you, captures your attention, and achieves all of this with a relatively small screen , Zuckerberg says.
Speaking of next-generation platforms, Zuckerberg believes they must offer a sense that the user is not separate from the world around them.
The basis of virtual and augmented reality is that you need technology that provides a sense of presence, a sense that you are actually there with another person, including all the senses that normally come with it , the Facebook boss explains.
Cell phones, tablets, and TV convince the human brain that you are actually somewhere else, but virtual and augmented reality will allow the brain, rather than convincing it, to believe the user is somewhere else , Zuckerberg says. These devices will be able to project people and objects in real time and include senses such as sound and touch.
When talking about augmented reality glasses, Zuckerberg sees nice normal-shaped glasses, nothing super thick . He says the battery on these devices would last all day and they would be able to project holograms.
Once we have augmented reality glasses, we won’t need other screens anymore. Things like TVs and tablets can be digital holograms , Zuckerberg explained, taking care not to mention smartphones directly.
Zuckerberg did not directly attack Apple (nor the rest of the smartphone market) in the interview, but he did so in a passive-aggressive way.
He also pointed out very clearly that he has preferred Samsung devices for years and that he told other managers on Facebook to use Android, not iPhone. He is also great at Spotify, which has been criticizing Apple for years. He added that Facebook invests the most in the mentioned technology, which is why it wants to enter the market with augmented reality glasses far ahead of everyone.
