Switzerland, which last fought a foreign power more than 200 years ago and has no obvious enemies, plans to spend billions of francs on new fighter jets.
Many oppose this, pointing out that a neutral country cannot afford such a cost nor does it need state-of-the-art aircraft to protect its territory that a supersonic jet can fly over in just ten minutes.
They also note that neither Ireland, Malta nor Luxembourg have jet planes, so the planned investment of six billion Swiss francs would be a waste of money.
"Who is our enemy?" Who is attacking a small, neutral country, surrounded by NATO? ”Asks Priska Seiler Graf , a Social Democrat in the Swiss parliament. "It's really absurd."
Voters will vote on September 27.
Approving the plan in a binding referendum would allow the government to choose next year between Airbus Eurofighter aircraft, Rafal French Dassault, Boeing F / A-18 Super Hornet aircraft, or Lockheed Martin F35-A Lightning II aircraft.
The aircraft would replace the Swiss fleet of old 30 F / A-18 Hornet aircraft that are being phased out in 2030.
Seiler Graf said cheaper alternatives, such as the combat version of Leonard's M346 aircraft, offer better value than the "expensive toys" under consideration.
