IVAN ĐIKIĆ 'In the spring, 500 infected in one day would be a big drama, but now we can fight it.' We have better methods of treatment, faster and more efficient testing, a certain collective immunity has been created, the scientist said Writes: Jutarnji.hrPosted: October 08, 2020 9:57 pm Dragan Matic / Cropix Prominent Croatian scientist Ivan Đikić commented on today's record number of new cases in Croatia for the HRT portal . He says that "it is to be expected that the number will continue to grow given the growth curve of the number of infected people in Croatia from the summer until today". - If you look at the moving 7-day average, you can see three waves of increase in newly infected viruses - from June 25 to August 4 (first increase with a peak of 80 newly infected), from August 4 to September 13 (second increase with a peak of 260 infected )) and now the third peak from September 13 until today (which now exceeds 300 newly infected), explains Đikić, adding that this indicates the necessary caution, but not the fear or the spread of panic. - In the spring, the number of 500 infected in one day would be a great drama, but today that number is something we can fight because we have already introduced some successful measures, we have better treatment methods, faster and more efficient testing, a certain collective immunity and all of which allows us to be able to send messages of caution rather than panic to the public, he says. • What are the reasons for such continuous growth? - Based on the data, we know that being indoors and larger gatherings are the biggest risks of transmitting the infection, especially if they occur without proper epidemiological measures. We have already learned this from many examples. Just remember the nightclubs that caused over 20% of all those infected during the summer in Croatia or the irresponsible gatherings we had recently in Popovača, said Đikić. • How to successfully combat this pandemic. What are the successful new measures in EU countries? RELATED NEWS Ivan Đikić SCIENTIST IN RIJEKA Đikić: 'Hysteria is unnecessary, don't scare people. Headquarters? They got very serious' IGNORING THE VIRUS Đikić revealed when we could get the vaccine, he also commented on the work of the Headquarters: 'They played a little' - Accuracy of data, more testing, clear communication and responsibility are the key to success in the fight against this virus. So we can keep life, the economy, schools and health facilities safe. We have already learned that in Croatia and many countries and we just need to adhere to these principles, said the eminent scientist. He points out that in many EU countries it is known exactly what measures are taken when they are adopted and what are the responsibilities of individuals, associations and public figures if they violate measures that protect everyone. - For example, if the number of infected in the country or province is over 30, 50 or 70 above 100,000 inhabitants, these are the measures we plan to introduce. Germany is now introducing exact color criteria (Red, Green Zone) for travel between countries within the EU. So we know in advance what awaits us, he explains. • Can we introduce such measures in Croatia as well? - Certainly, we should have something similar in Croatia and our citizens could be calmer. In Croatia, it is not always clear what exactly we want to communicate to citizens because the messages are ambivalent. Citizens do not know whether the measures should be adhered to or are they just recommendations, and who is responsible? In this way, we encourage those who work without responsibility to the detriment of the majority, who protect themselves and others with the right measures. This special responsibility belongs to politicians who should be an example of adhering to the set measures, which, unfortunately, is too often not the case, said Ivan Đikić for the HRT portal.
