IVAN ĐIKIĆ & MIROSLAV RADMAN

The eminent scientist lashed out at the academic and his interpretation of the Covida-19 disease epidemic By: Javorka LueticPosted: October 9, 2020 10:13 pm Ivan Đikić and Miroslav Radman Academician Ivan Đikić reacted fiercely to the statements of academician Miroslav Radman and his interpretation of the Covid-19 epidemic and disease. Let us recall what Radman said: When asked how he commented on the increase in coronavirus patients in the world and in Croatia, he said that in Croatia, as in most countries in the world, about one percent of the population dies every year, as much as they are born, writes Slobodna Dalmacija . - About 50,000 people die in Croatia every year, which is a little more than one percent. When we add to that about 300 deaths from Covid - those are the codes 50,000 plus 300. Why are we so excited? Because the zoom is on the nasty death of older people because of covid. Let's zoom in on chemotherapy, cancer, including for the elderly and inflammation - and it looks bad, we wouldn't die if it didn't look bad, "said Radman, emphasizing that he doesn't want to insinuate anything but notices basic figures. - Here I would like to ask the question, why is 300 deaths more important than 50,000 deaths? Some will answer because I am afraid that 300 will not become 30,000 or 300,000. Well, you can take anything and assume that, "Radman said. He added that he is for common sense, which, according to him, is not enough even in the most developed countries. "Common sense is declining, because if it weren't declining, we wouldn't be dealing so badly with a relatively banal problem of infectious diseases that were far worse in the past," Radman concluded. And here is what Djikic says: - The COVID virus must not be ignored or belittled. We have learned this from the example of many countries in the world, especially the richest and most advanced countries in the world, the United States. They had over 210,000 dead (more than in any war or disaster in the last 100 years) and over 7 million sick within nine months. One-fifth of companies closed and 30 million people lost their jobs. It is necessary to behave properly There are scientifically unfounded comparisons of wrong numbers that want to reduce the danger of this virus to the public because it will only lead to more damage and spread of the virus, and thus impact on the economy, health system and mortality. With proper behavior, new drugs, better testing and appropriate measures and without complete quarantine, we can control this virus until vaccination arrives and thus ensure health, education and the economy. We can follow the examples of New Zealand, South Korea, Germany and many other countries - said Djikic. We asked Djikic what he thought about Radman's assumption that it might be two viruses !? Namely, so far this possibility has not been mentioned by any of the scientists dealing with this topic. RELATED NEWS Miroslav Radman SCIENTIFIC DISCUSSION Radman's statement caused a storm, here is what the experts say: 'He is completely right, but ...' MIROSLAV RADMAN '50,000 people die in Croatia every year. Why would 300 dead from the crown be more important? ' - I am not aware of any scientific work that there is a mixture of two different COVID viruses from different countries that can explain the differences in the clinical picture in patients. The fact is that SARS-CoV-2 did not change significantly with mutations, ie it did not weaken during the summer nor did it mutate and become more dangerous now in the fall. The virus is therefore functionally the same but the environment changes, the concentration of the virus. There are differences in individuals' genetic, comorbidities, age, and especially the immune response of people who come in contact with viruses - says Đikić. Radman also mentioned AIDS. - We will have to wait to see if the natural changes and mutations in the coronavirus are close to those of the AIDS virus. Will it be a barrier? That remained a barrier - we have 40 years of fighting AIDS and the vaccine never came because the principle of the vaccine is to stimulate the synthesis of a single antibody that will effectively neutralize the virus. But what if the virus changes and the vaccine does not change? The vaccine makes one type of antibody, not another, and when it fails - then it fails. So, one should go for strategies that are not based on a vaccine but - as in the case of AIDS - on two or three different drugs that poison the life of the virus, but not as antibodies, but simply in two or three places well chemically poisoning his life and then the virus becomes impotent , is no longer as effective as a virus, and that is enough - Radman explained his position. Đikić did not remain indebted to him here either: - It is important to emphasize that COVID and AIDS are different diseases and that SARS-CoV2 and HIV are different viruses. Vaccines are more successful for influenza and COVID and we are more likely to get a successful and effective vaccine than targeted drugs because we need a much longer time for them. It took only 42 days or a couple of months to create different vaccines with new technologies before clinical trials began. In the case of new targeted drugs against the COVID virus, it takes a significantly longer time before clinical trials can begin - concluded Đikić. A new cure for the crown At what stage is your lab in terms of creating a drug for Covid-19 ?. - Our laboratory works to the maximum on the detection of weak points of the coronavirus and the possible creation of new and targeted drugs for specific enzymes of the COVID virus. Based on our discovery that was published two months ago in the journal Nature, we are working with several companies today. Trust me, we work every day to reach a solution as soon as possible. But it takes time of a year or more to create new chemical inhibitors that may become drugs in the future. On the other hand, in the laboratory we are working to the maximum on an already approved preparation called famotidine, which has been shown in clinical studies in the USA to reduce the symptoms of the seriously ill and mortality from COVID. This possible future medicine does not affect the virus itself, but it has a positive effect on the immune system of the infected person - says Đikić for Slobodna Dalmacija .
