Seventeen hours after he was diagnosed with covid-19 infection, U.S. President Donald Trump was flown by helicopter to Walter Reed Military Hospital near Washington.
"As a precaution and on the recommendation of his doctors and medical experts, President Trump will be working from the presidential office at Walter Reed Hospital for the next few days," White House spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany said .
The hospital has a presidential suite, a meeting room and a hospital room. In a separate hospital pavilion with six apartments, in addition to the presidential one, there is also a first lady's apartment. Walter Reed is a reputable American hospital, well known to our public because President Franjo Tuđman and Minister of Defense Gojko Šušak were treated there in the 1990s .
The hospital has regularly treated American presidents since Franklin Roosevelt, who laid the foundation stone for it. It is primarily intended for soldiers, but provides medical services to the American political elite, members of Congress, and the Supreme Court.
Secret
President Tudjman was diagnosed with stomach cancer at the hospital in November 1996. He remained in the hospital for 20 days. The president's illness and treatment were kept secret, and no one dared to speak publicly about it. In October 1999, Tudjman fell ill during a trip to Rome, so he returned to Zagreb earlier.
He was visibly weak and ill. At the press conference, only Jutarnji list journalist Boris Vlašić dared to ask him about his health condition. On the edge of his nerves, Tudjman said that "every man can be a little tired and cold."
"He pounded on the podium so much that one dictaphone fell to the floor, and all my colleagues walked away from me, so I was left standing alone," describes Vlašić. Tudjman soon ended up in hospital, from which he will not come out alive.

The then Minister of Defense Gojko Šušak was also treated at the Walter Reed Hospital. He was suffering from lung cancer. He underwent surgery at Walter Reed, but died soon after.
Years later, former Health Minister Dr. Andrija Hebrang testified that he had barely persuaded President Tudjman to be examined. At a routine checkup, he was diagnosed with stomach cardiac cancer. The diagnosis was confirmed in the United States.
“In Walter Reed he was told he was nine months old and I never agreed with that,” Hebrang said. Tudjman suffered from cancer, which can only be seen on ultrasound when it metastasizes and enlarges the surrounding lymph nodes. The focus was discovered on the same day. At the time, chemotherapy was the only therapy. "
Resistance
At Walter Reed, they refused to give him chemotherapy on the grounds that he would have a poor quality of life, and they did not want to operate on him. They only irradiated the area once. In my opinion, they were wrong. One-time radiation does not kill the tumor, but it can make the situation worse because the blood vessel wall begins to thicken and the cytostatic cannot reach the tumor, "Dr. Andrija Hebrang later said. He opposed the position of American doctors.
"I knew we had very good therapies for such a tumor and even today it's not clear to me why Walter Reed refused to go with that therapy." "President, it is out of the question, I guarantee you three years of life," he told Tudjman.
He brought in foreign doctors to examine him and persuade him to start chemotherapy. Tudjman accepted that to his heart's content. But the resistance disappeared when the chemotherapy began to work, the tumor receded, and he regained strength for daily commitments. He lived three times longer than he had been predicted in Walter Reed.
