French President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday that an agreement on the EU's recovery plan and multiannual budget was "the most important moment since the introduction of the euro". The 750 billion-euro deal is the result of "three years of cooperation between France and Germany," he said in an interview with TF1 television. “I want our citizens to understand the importance of what happened these four days and nights,” Macron said, describing the deal as “historic”. Macron said the deal represents “a project for which the French people have given me their trust” when it was elected in the 2017 presidential election on a liberal and pro-European platform. The leaders of the EU member states reached an agreement on Tuesday morning after four days of marathon negotiations on an EU recovery plan worth 750 billion euros and a seven-year budget of 1074 billion euros. "We have succeeded. I believe that this agreement will be seen as a key moment on the European journey, but it will also introduce us to the future," European Council President Charles Michel said. The 750 billion-euro recovery plan envisions 390 billion in grants and 360 billion in loans.
