More than 90 people were killed in Ethiopia during protests that sparked the murder of the popular singer, state media reported on Thursday.
Ethiopian singer Hachalu Hundessa was shot dead in the capital Addis Ababa on Monday night. His supporters claim that he was killed by security forces and that it was a "politically motivated" crime.
In Oromia province, 81 people were killed during violent protests that prompted the killing, regional police chief Walta Info told pro-government media. Eight civilians and two police officers have been killed in Addis Ababa since the beginning of the protest, the police chief said on state television.
Hachalu, meanwhile, was buried Thursday morning in his hometown of Ambu, in the central province of Oromia. He was buried according to the rite of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church with strict security measures.
Fewer people are allowed to attend the funeral.
Many associate Hachalu’s music with the goals of the Oromo ethnic group, individually the most numerous in a multiethnic state whose members feel the government ignores them.
