Police seized 7.5 tons of pure cocaine, the infamous drug cartel lost $ 286 million
The drugs were mixed with construction materials and are linked to the Gulf Clan armed group.
Colombia and the United States seized more than 7.5 tonnes of cocaine worth $ 286 million in a joint operation, the Colombian government announced on Wednesday.
The narcotics were mixed with construction materials and transported between the Colombian port city of Cartagena and Panama, the government reported.
The drugs "belonged to structures involved in drug trafficking and are linked to the Gulf Clan armed group," it said, and cocaine was to be received by other criminal groups in Central America and Europe.
The potential production of pure cocaine hydrochloride in Colombia rose 1.5 percent last year to 1,137 metric tons, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime announced in June, although the area planted with coca, the main ingredient in cocaine, has shrunk.
Despite decades of fighting drug crime, Colombia remains one of the world's most cocaine-producing countries. Left-wing insurgents, criminal gangs and former right-wing paramilitaries have been involved in cocaine production and transportation mainly to North America and Europe, security sources said.
