priests were supposed to utter the commands of Invisible Being whose strange
tempers could clearly be read in violent
outbreaks and changing aspects of the sky. The more irrational the laws of the
priests appeared, the more evident it was that they were not of man. Terror generated
piety; wild savages were tamed into
obedience; they became the slaves of unseen; they humbled themself before the priest
, and inplicidly fallowed their commands, that they might ecape sickness,
calamity, and sudden death; they minds ere subjected to a useful discipline;
they aquired the habit of self- denial, which, like all habits can become a plesure to the mind, and can be
trasmitted as a tendency or instinct from generation to generation….. But the
chief benefit which religion ever conffered upon mankind , whether in ancien orin
the modern time, was undouptedly the oath. The priests taught that if promice
was made in the name of gods, and that promise was broken, the gods would kill
those who took their name invain. Such
is the true meaning of the third commandment.
The priests
in order to encrease their power studied
the property of plants, the mouvemnents of the stars ; they cultivated music and the imitative arts; reserving their knowlege
to the own caste, they soon surpassed in mental capacity the people whom they
ruled…..“
