Germany accuses the US: You stole our 200,000 protective masks, we paid them
BERLIN authorities have accused the United States of intercepting a shipment of 200,000 face masks, which Berlin has already paid for. The US has committed "an act of modern piracy," Andreas Geisel, Berlin's interior minister, said today.
Specifically, Germany has ordered FFP2 class masks for Berlin police officers, which provide some degree of protection against the virus. She ordered them from a US-based company, but the masks are made in China, writes DW .
"We should not use Wild West methods"
"The shipment was seized in Bangkok. The move was apparently related to the US ban on mask exports," Geisel said.
"Although times of crisis, we should not use the methods of the Wild West. I ask the German government to demand that the United States abide by international agreements," he added.
The incident occurred just a day after French officials accused US customers of stopping shipments from China to the hard-hit regions of France. Officials say the Americans got to the already loaded plane and offered a much higher price for protective equipment.
