Letters from 4 eminent specialists who warned for five years: Stop the abuser psychiatrist
'I feel deep concern about the actions of a ward colleague ... he has deeply violated the boundaries of the patient-physician relationship'

After Jutarnji list published a story on Friday, September 4, about a psychiatrist from Varaždin who sexually assaulted his patients, manipulated them and had sexual intercourse, several other women, who had unpleasant experiences with the same doctor, contacted the editorial office. . All the stories have a few things in common: all the women at the time were very young, the oldest in their early twenties, and lacked any self-confidence. The doctor complimented them and quickly tied them to himself. And then it would, Maja tells us, whose real name is not, launched an attack. - I was a high school student, at the age of 18. I had various behavioral excesses and was prone to suicide. After one such excess, the professor urgently sent me to the hospital in the middle of class to talk to a psychiatrist. Even today I vividly remember the hallway on the ground floor and the few people sitting there. I waited for a while, so they called me to the first office on the right. At the table was a young man, without a white coat, casually dressed. I would never think it was a psychiatrist. Like a man sitting outside for coffee. There were a lot of pictures on the walls, nothing like a doctor's office to me. I remember the African mask and his picture with President Tudjman, who gives him some paper. My self-esteem was very low. Nobody wanted to hang out with me, they didn't accept me at school at all - Maja tells us. She is a very pretty girl, but even today she doesn’t believe it.
- Later he started telling me "so why do you think that way about yourself, so you are young, handsome, intelligent ...". Compliment after compliment, it impressed me, it definitely boosted my confidence. He then opened a Facebook profile and told me to add him as a friend, and he would follow my statuses and posts to follow what I was thinking, whether I was progressing or not. I thought to myself, "I guess a man knows what he's doing." I told my mom that too and she concluded the same. I remember one Saturday, I was out with my cousin. He called me around 10 pm, asked me where I was, if I was awake. I said I was out. He questioned where I was, I wrote. He asked who I was with. Examined what we were doing. All evening. We ended up at a party, he wrote me "it's a shame you're with friends, that you couldn't see each other". He questioned me about going outside, but we didn’t go. Then I had outbursts that involved throwing things away, scratching myself, pulling my hair out. He told me "the next time you're nervous, don't scratch, just imagine kissing your tits." He used to come to therapy in a T-shirt / undershirt, tanned, muscular, in jeans. He told me he was 26, 27 years old. It was weird to me, I was calculating it at home. I remembered the picture with Tudjman that impressed me. So I thought, if I was a kid when he died, and he's eight years older than me, it didn't suit me at all. So I asked him that, and he told me that Tudjman was their family friend. I soon found a boyfriend, I didn’t want to take pills and I said I didn’t want to come anymore. He just asked me, "Why don't you want to see me again?" I said I didn’t want to and that was the end of the therapy. In the meantime, he deleted his Facebook profile - Maja concludes her story.
Severe condition
She says that she is happy now, which turned out to be the way it is, because when she read the testimonies in Jutarnji and listened to the TV report in Provjeren Nova TV, what could have happened to other girls could have happened to her. She says that she is especially tired of the story about a girl whose doctor allegedly touched her breasts to check for "milk". It was about a then severely anxious girl who was given medication by a psychiatrist whose side effect could be lactation, and then squeezed her breasts "to see if there was milk". Eight years later, in a difficult condition, she turned to psychotherapist Nebojsa Budjanovac and told him her story.
- She handed over the case to the State Attorney's Office, but she was told that it was too late and that it was obsolete - Nebojsa Budjanovac told us . Personally, he says, appalled by the story, in 2016 he reported the doctor to the Croatian Medical Chamber.
"And I'm still waiting for a reaction," he says. Nebojsa Budjanovac is not the only one who warned about a psychiatrist. The pioneer of addiction treatment in Croatia, Dr. Slavko Sakoman , is also well acquainted with the behavior of the so-called psychiatrist.
- Two years ago, my parents brought my underage daughter to the office for a second opinion regarding her mental health. In her medical history, she told me that she experienced a shock when a psychiatrist at the hospital started touching her and approaching her inappropriately. She experienced it as a sexual assault. She started screaming and ran away - the doctor tells us. And he says it wasn't the first time he'd heard about the case.
- Nine years ago, at one point, a fellow psychotherapist told me that a patient had complained to a psychiatrist. He had a part-time contract in one of the newly opened psychiatric clinics at the Institute of Public Health. I started watching him and it seemed to me that there was really something wrong with his behavior, so I suggested that his contract not be extended - Dr. Sakoman told us. The institution did not extend the contract with the psychiatrist. Dr. Sakoman was recently summoned to testify in a court trial about his findings regarding a psychiatrist. Is prone to inappropriate behavior. - I told everything and asked that the issue of ethics of his work be put on the agenda. He denied this in the process and did not bear any sanctions. I suggested to the person with whom he is being tried to go through the media, because it seems that there will be nothing from his sanctioning - says Dr. Sakoman. To him, he says, "it is catastrophic when a young person, vulnerable and alone, encounters such a person who uses him for his lust." The former head of the named psychiatrist initiated proceedings against him, she told Jutarnji list, but she was immediately removed from the position of the head of the Department of Psychiatry. She says she was under pressure and left the hospital. A psychiatrist sued her for mobbing and the process is not over yet.
The woman who turned to Dr. Sakoman to testify about her knowledge of the doctor is a psychologist herself. The psychiatrist manipulated and seduced her daughter, a girl then with mental difficulties. Her name is Petra Milković , that is her real name and she decided to tell her story publicly. After talking to her, we called the lawyer of the named psychiatrist, Željka Brlečić . We asked her to present the side of her client's story before the announcement, to comment on the accusations against him.
- Do you know that she was in a love affair with my client? he asks.
