The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz, accompanied by two cruise missile cruisers and a destroyer, "completed its passage through the Strait of Hormuz on September 18 and entered the Persian Gulf," the U.S. Fifth Fleet said. Nimitz, the first U.S. aircraft carrier to pass through the area since December 2019, will take part in anti-jihadist coalition operations in the Middle East, the Fifth Fleet adds. “The presence of aircraft carriers, an extremely adaptable force, demonstrates the ability of a U.S. navy to fly, sail and act wherever international law allows to support coalition operations,” said Vice Admiral Samuel Paparo , commander of the Fifth Fleet.
