In the text of the resolution, Parliament "strongly condemns the heinous death of George Floyd in the United States, as well as similar killings elsewhere in the world." The EP expresses support for recent demonstrations against racism and discrimination and condemns "white racism in all its forms." MEPs condemn police actions against "peaceful African-American protesters and journalists" and "inflammatory rhetoric" by US President Donald Trump . “Excessive use of force against people is contrary to the principles of proportionality,” they write. The resolution also emphasizes that racist and xenophobic speech is not a matter of freedom of expression. During Wednesday's plenary debate, German MEP Pierrette Herzberger-Fofana said she was a victim of police violence the day before in Brussels when she photographed a speech she thought was violent, a version disputed by Belgian police. She received a standing ovation for her speech and told MEPs that she was touched by the gesture. The UN Human Rights Council also unanimously adopted a resolution Friday condemning systemic racism and police violence, but after withdrawing certain references to the United States.
