Greece has stepped up forces on the border with Turkey and warned that Ankara, with which it has strained relations due to energy reserves in the Eastern Mediterranean, could use migrants to put pressure on the EU.
Greek Deputy Migration Minister Giorgos Koumoutsakos warned on Sunday that Ankara could use migrants to put pressure on the European Union not to impose sanctions on Turkey over a dispute with Greece over gas reserves Athens considers to be in its exclusive economic zone.
"We are ready and we will respond as in March," Koumoutsakos told the Skai news agency.
In March, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan announced that the Turkish border with Greece was open, after which thousands of migrants came to it with the intention of entering the European Union via Greece.
Greece then deployed additional security forces to prevent migrants from crossing the border. The EU's border control agency, Frontex, is also on the Greek-Turkish border.
Turkey and Greece, both NATO members, have been at loggerheads over natural gas reserves in the eastern Mediterranean since Turkey sent a seismic survey ship to the area on August 10th, accompanied by warships.
