Scientists have identified a new coronavirus strain that has become dominant worldwide and appears to be more contagious than versions that spread in the early days of the Covida-19 pandemic, according to a new study led by scientists at the National Laboratory in Los Alamo
The new strain appeared in February in Europe, has migrated rapidly to the east coast of the United States and has been dominant around the world since mid-March, scientists said.
In addition to spreading faster, it can make people more vulnerable to another infection, Morning reports .
Wherever the new strain appeared, it quickly infected many more people than the earlier strains that came from Wuhan, and within a few weeks was the only strain prevalent in some countries, the report said. The dominance of the new strain over its predecessors shows that it is more contagious, the report said, although it is not yet known how much more contagious it is.
Italy was one of the first countries to see a new strain of virus in the last week of February, almost at the same time as the original strain appeared. Washington was among the first U.S. states to be affected by the original strain in late February, but by March 15, the mutant strain had dominated. New York hit the original virus around March 15, but within days the mutant strain took over. A team of scientists did not report the results for California.
Scientists at large organizations working on the vaccine or medicines told the Los Angeles Times that they were hoping for initial evidence that the virus was stable and unlikely to mutate to how the flu virus works, requiring a new vaccine every year. The Los Alamos report could rebut that assumption.
